The Workshop

Piano selection

All our pianos are carefully selected. We source pianos from reputable brands known for their craftsmanship, build quality and tonal character. Our range of brands ensures we have pianos to suit all budgets – from the beginner to the professional pianist.

We make sure that the structure and framework of each piano is sound. Then we assess the casework and inside mechanisms.

Inside work

The inside work is where the magic happens. This is where the bulk of the restoration process takes place. All the complex mechanisms and the setup are regulated so that playability, feel, and tonal character are maximised.

THE Action

The action/mechanism for each key is a complex series of components that must work in harmony. It takes you from pressing the key to the hammer striking the strings. All the components are checked, replaced if needed, with careful consideration and respect for the original design and character of the piano. Each piano varies in its action and feel, so it is vital to try out different models to find your perfect match.

THE Keys

When your fingers touch the piano, the keys become the bridge between your soul and the music you create. The exterior key-tops of each key are checked and replaced if damaged. All the interior spaces are cleaned and tidied, replacing felts and adjusting the pins to ensure they are positioned perfectly.

Frame and strings

The frame holds the strings secure. All tuning pegs are checked and tightened. The strings are assessed for condition and cleaned. If restringing is needed, bespoke string sets are perfectly matched and installed.

The Regulation

Once all the components of the action, keys, frame and strings are restored, they are set up during the regulation phase. This is the important part of the setup that maximises the piano’s playability and tonal character. Every key is checked to ensure aspects like the first response, bridal tapes, set-off, depth of touch and other alignments are all set to standard.

Tuning

Now that the insides of the piano are restored and set up, the strings can be tuned. Our experienced piano tuners can tune to standard A440 concert pitch, or to other bespoke tunings. We also offer tuning as a service, which we recommend to do twice per year to ensure upkeep of your piano.

Casework

Every piano comes with its own history and condition. Part of the beauty of refurbished pianos is the signs of life. We restore any major wear. However, usually these cosmetic signs of use are left to become a vintage hallmark. We do consider making additional alterations like polishing, though these are done on a case-by-case basis.

Final assembly

On completion of the detailed work, the pianos are now fully restored.

They are displayed in our workshop, ready for you to play. You can arrange a visit, when you will have time to play, compare and contrast, until you find your perfect piano.
